One of my absolute favourite things about travelling is walking around to search for street arts. I love how casual they seem and yet most of them require exhaustive labour. I have photographed a lot of street arts, from Lisbon to Penang. For each trip, I always try to find out if there are any street arts worth finding. For instance in Penang, they provided a map where you could spot them yourself. This was super fun because I could do it in my own time. In Lisbon, I didn’t need much effort since you could find colourful street arts everywhere. There was however a one popular place, which I took the time to see.
I also did some hunting in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. My favourite place in Singapore is Tiong Bahru. To be honest, TB is one of my favourite places in Singapore so I might be biased there. In this post, however, I’m going to show you some of my favourite findings in my city, Yogyakarta.
Yogyakarta is a place known for its universities and also its art and culture. The city is filled with many artists, there are many places dedicated for the creatives in this town if you really pay attention. My city is a gem for street arts, and thanks to those talented artists, it really brightens up the city.
One time these artists invaded our city, by placing various installations in street junctions, traffic lights, and also sidewalks. It was so lovely to see!
Visiting Yogyakarta won’t be complete without taking a walk into the little aisles inside the city. Famous artistic areas in Yogyakarta include Prawirotaman and Tirtodipuran. The two are very close to each other and you can find amazing street arts along the two streets. A lot of people like to walk but cars and motorbikes are still allowed to enter these streets so you must be careful. I love going to these streets in the morning when there are not as much traffic, which also gives time for you to hunt for hidden street arts.
A lot of these artists tag themselves in the art works and each of them have their own unique styles. One of my most seen and favourite artist goes by the name of Anagard. I love their play of cultural symbols and even sometimes political issues combined with their distinguished style of bright and bold colours.
I am always on the look out for new street arts, they can often be found in the strangest places!
